Description

Label: This print depicts the infant Jesus with his mother, the Virgin Mary, who holds him, and with his foster father, Joseph, who stands by them protectively. Joseph of Nazareth was a descendant of the Hebrew king David. After marrying Mary, Joseph discovered that she was already with child, and so he no longer wanted her as his wife. The Bible recounts that an angel told Joseph the child to be born was the son of God and had been begotten by the Holy Ghost, so Joseph became the protector of his wife and foster son. Joseph was later declared a Christian saint.
