Compare this sculpture to the large standing figure of the Hindu god Vishnu which appears around the corner to your right.
The Vishnu stands in front of an elaborate throne back. To his right and left, at the level of his arms, the throne back is decorated with elephants, warriors, and a rearing lion-like creature. This sculpture probably formed part of the throne back for a very large figure, either Hindu or Buddhist. One piece of the same type and size is still in place in the throne of a huge seated Buddha in Kauvadol, Bihar state.
