This head once belonged to a Buddha image like the Buddha Vairochana nearby.
The head is similar to those found on images of Buddhas at Borobudur, one of the largest and most complex surviving monuments of the Buddhist world. Borobudur is a gigantic step pyramid with five square levels surmounted by three circular ones. The circular levels
support seventy-two small stupas, and a large stupa crowns the entire structure. In niches along the square levels and inside the small stupas were a total of 504 Buddha images.
