Text EntriesA self-taught landscape artist, Ya Ming learned from nature on his many trips to scenic areas in China and his paintings of the Yellow Mountains (Huangshan) and the Three Gorges were much admired. He joined the Jiangsu Painting Academy and became a key figure in the development of the Nanjing school in South Central China. This work was painted in 1978, shortly after a period of inactivity due to his suffering in the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). Here, the artist’s dramatic rendition of the overlapping cliffs in clouds suggests not only a tribute to the monumental landscape style of the Northern Song period (960–1179), but also an outpouring of his distinctive style renewed with quality and maturity.
