WHAT’S THE STORY?
In this striking scene, the snow-covered peak of Mt. Fuji rises above Suruga Bay. When combined with Fuji’s white peak, the scene of people gathering and boiling salt along the shore references the village of Tagonoura. Nearby, sails billow on the bay and pine trees line the beach.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK
The gold disk and rays that make up the sun were embroidered using threads wrapped in gold-covered paper. Too thick to pass through the cloth, the threads are “couched” or stitched to the surface with slender silk threads.
