In many of his cloud paintings, like this work, Huang Junbi captured clouds from different perspectives, whether in a close-up of the billowing ocean, in mist suspended among mountain valleys, or in broad hazy panoramas viewed from a high vantage point. He did not focus on the trees' details but suggested their leaves using ink washes to convey the verdant quality of the plants.

Born to a cultured family from Nanhai, Guangdong province, Huang moved to Taiwan in 1949, where he achieved success painting scenes of cloudy mountains and pine trees. He insisted on the nature-inspired origins of his style, and even gave the name "white clouds" to his studio.
