Since very little color remains on most surviving early Buddhist sculptures, it is easy to forget that they were brightly painted when in use. This piece is an exception. It is not entirely clear when these pigments were applied, as some sculptures continued to be used for worship for long periods of time, and their pigments were regularly “restored.”
