In China, Neolithic cultures have often been given the name of the sites at which evidence of the culture was discovered. This piece is in a style associated with Banshan, a site in Gansu province in northwest China; it belongs to a broader group first discovered at Majiayao, also in Gansu. Chinese Neolithic cultures that used painted pottery are known collectively as the Yangshao culture. Thus, this piece would be described more completely as coming from the Banshan phase of the Majiayao culture of the Yangshao civilization.
