Banana Tree

The artist used a fully laden brush to depict the vigorous leaves and a dry brush for the withered leaves and trunk. The pink blossom (not included in traditional paintings) contrasts with the black leaves, and the praying mantis adds a whimsical touch. The shapely banana (or plantain) tree has inspired many artists, poets, and musicians of China. A famous piece of Cantonese music is based on the sound of raindrops falling on banana leaves. The verse on the painting reads:

I recall fondly a life devoted to books.
The banana I planted for the sound of the rain.
