Text EntriesA long vertical stroke, representing a tree branch, runs the entire length of the scroll. A single cicada rests on the diagonal branch of this leafless autumn plant. The minimalist look of this composition is daring. It is a simple yet dynamic work, done in pale dry ink, full of vigor. The composition draws one’s attention to Chao Shao-an’s distinctive calligraphy at the upper right. His inscription reads:
Just now, a single cicada cries in the daybreak moon.
In an instant, the west wind ushers in autumn.
