A young woman in striped kimono and black haori (coat) is seated before a kotatsu, a kind of charcoal brazier or hearth covered with a quilt to hold in the warmth. She leans upon the wooden table frame that supports the quilt above the fire. Through the glass panel in the shoji, a snowstorm outside is seen contrasting with the warm, cozy room.
