Ceramic pillows were made in vast quantities in a wide variety of shapes, for use both in sleeping and in burials. This is an exceptionally fine example of the sculpting style of Song ceramics made at the Ding kiln in Hebei province. Boy-shaped pillows were favored by women. With their heads resting on such pillows, women would dream of having more sons.
