The temples of the former Thai kingdom of Sukhothai (mid1200s–1438) were decorated with a variety of glazed ceramic elements. Mythical serpents such as this were used as roof ornaments and at the ends of stair handrails. Another ceramic roof ornament can be seen nearby, mounted high on the wall to suggest its original elevated position.
