清牧之瓧篆書《元好問疗句》對羑
Zhao Zhiqian has been regarded as the culmination of
the stele school, which drew inspiration from ancient
models, in the development of calligraphy history.
Extremely talented and creative in painting, calligraphy,
and seal carving alike, he was a great synthesizer
who transformed the tradition. In calligraphy, he was
skilled in all script types. This couplet, written in seal
script, came from the last two sentences added to a
poem composed in a dream by the poet Yuan Haowen
(1190–1257) of the Jin dynasty (1115–1234). The sentiment
was that one's joy in achieving official success and
fame is no better than just enjoying a simple life with
nature and wine.

The Chinese transcription below corresponds to the
calligraphy, which reads from top to bottom and right
to left (righthand scroll) and from top to bottom and
left to right (lefthand scroll):
