Three Amusementsof Modern Beauties

Woodblock print; ink and colors on paper,
2005.100.78This print comes from a set representing beauties from
three prostitution districts in Edo: Hokkoku, Fukagawa,
and Yanagibashi. The standing woman in this print is
from Hokkoku, the area to the north of the city where
the Yoshiwara is located. The long format of this print
emphasizes the statuesque figure of the courtesan. Her
front-tied obi, bare feet, and the tissue paper she holds
are clues to her profession. Behind her, a child attendant
holds a fan indicating that it is summer.
