Mother peeping at her baby

2005.100.79Despite the young woman who tries to restrain him,
a baby has crawled out from behind a low screen
to peek at his mother getting ready. The mother
catches sight of him and plays peekaboo, sticking
out her tongue for him to see in her round mirror.
The baby’s partially shaved hairstyle indicates
that he is younger than three years old. The artist
Utamaro is known for his depictions of mothers
and children in intimate, everyday settings.
