The conventional chevron band is seen on the cylindrical neck of this double-handled jar with an ovoid belly resting on a flat base. The decorative motif consists of zoomorphic shapes and concentric circles symmetrically arranged on the body. The zoomorphic design seen here has been variously interpreted as representing a frog or a human. The motif, rendered in a variety of ways, commonly decorates Machang wares unearthed from several areas in Qinghai and Gansu provinces in far Northwest China.
