Rounded hexagonal lidded box

This finely carved lacquer object was created by a sixteenth-century artisan, who attempted here to copy a fifteenth-century style developed at the newly established imperial workshop in Beijing. This style is characterized by relatively deep carving, revealing smoothly polished decoration yet straight-edged cuts. The floral motifs are highlighted in amber-lobed frames around the body, which are set off by miniature flowers. Together they celebrate the timeless seasons of the year. Small jars such as this, often made in pairs, were favored items for storing chess pieces, medicine, or makeup powder.
